A NSFW Tanka (sorry!)

Learning to Write #24

(It’s only the last one, which contains a swear word and I should apologise for, but it felt entirely appropriate)

In his collection of haiku (“Anchorage”) David Cobb quotes some advice he has about writing haiku for 25 years and then publishing just the ten best poems from the whole period. It is easy to rattle out haiku and pretty easy to churn out tanka; if you can count then you have a good start, and Cobb doesn’t even bother with this for a lot of his. Making good haiku, that’s the nub of it. Our digital world gives everyone the chance to publish every thought, having an impact with what you put out there, that’s the challenge.

But having said that, šŸ™‚ here are three more of my Tuesday Tanka. The one below is about vintage radio. I loved the Friday Rock Show, hiding under my blankets with an old transistor radio in the shape of a Rolls Royce. No AUX output so entirely reliant on pressing the speaker to my ear. Heady days of 80’s rock. Happy days.

And finally, inspired by Teresa May’s collapsing scenery at the Conservative Conference:
